Leon works at the CWIC Scaffolding Academy in Swansea in a team of three instructors. Leon has a partner, children and a grandchild, he shelved his childhood dream to become an astronaut to work with buildings after he left school.

Why did you want to become an instructor?

Leon’s parents owned a scaffolding company so it was natural that he followed them into the business. Leon has the experience of being a scaffolder on a range of sites and loves passing on his knowledge to new learners.

It was only natural that Leon moved from tools to teaching in his career progression. Leon loves working with the scaffolding student cohort, keeping them on track to finish the course and their qualification.

Progress as an instructor

Leon joined the CWIC Scaffolding Academy in October 2022, after completing the Advanced CPD Refresher course. He started his Instructor training in February 2023, and is due to become a fully accredited CISRSR Instructor in the summer of 2024.

How the funding helped the centre to support them

The CISRS funding has paid for Leon to finish his Instructor training and work locally at the only purpose-developed scaffolding facility in Wales. There is little doubt that Leon is a popular instructor, being approachable, personable and patient.

Evaluation at the end of the process

The CWIC Scaffolding Academy were happy to support Leon’s application to become an Instructor and then retain him as a member of staff.

Evaluation of his classes has shown him to be confident with his students, able to pass on new knowledge of the scaffolding field and encourage the students to finish the course.
